Copyrights
Laws of the United States provide copyright protection to the authors of original works of authorship that are fixed in a tangible form of expression including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works.
This protection is available to both published and unpublished works and generally gives the owner of the copyright the exclusive right to authorize others to reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute copies or phonorecords, perform publicly, or display the copyrighted work.
Copyrights are not secured automatically when the work is created. A work is considered created when it is fixed in a copy or phonorecord for the first time. If a work is prepared over a period of time, the part of the work that is fixed on a particular date constitutes the "created work" as of that date.
A copyright application may be submitted by the author. Fairway Press may apply for the copyright in the author's name (unless otherwise stipulated in your contract). However, this is in addition to your contract and will result in additional cost to you as the author. The copyright is the sole property of the author.
